Year 10 More Able Trip to UCL
On the 7th of January 2020 a group of more able Year 10 students were invited to take part in a day of activities at the University College London (UCL).
Whilst there, the students were introduced to Medical Physics by a leading scientist in the field, who delivered a series of lectures and interactive practical activities.
The students got to witness first-hand the many uses of light in medicine; this included an observation of the manipulation of light via fibre optic cables, as well as looking at the effect different wavelengths of light had when shone on the human body.
Finally, the group had the chance to trial 'metabolight' - a state of the art medical device which shows the amount of oxygenated blood, brain metabolism, and deoxygenated blood in the different regions of the brain, all using light.
The day provided a fun and engaging introduction to medical physics and was designed to increase the awareness of potential future career and education choices.
