Chobham art students have been involved a two-year programme which involves pupils learning about their local river in the first year, then learning about a river in another country in the second. The project encourages young people to explore and reflect on local and global issues, giving them the experience to build the skills they need for life and work in a global society.

Our photography-based image, created in collaboration with artist Shona Watts during the lock-down, was inspired by the Silvertown banks of the river Thames, where the John Knight & Sons Soap Works once stood. This was a family business that made affordable soaps, oils and candles. They also supplied high-quality soaps to the King and the rest of the royal family.

Students were asked to submit their own photography of hand washing and their images were manipulated to create a giant banner and flag. Our chosen topic was particularly poignant due to the COVID public information handwashing campaign.
